How you deal or don't deal with toxicity can be a determining factor in your mental health journey. Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month and dealing with toxic people can be challenging, let's discuss some ways to help you handle things.
Protecting your mental health while managing toxic interactions is being proactive. Menopause is an emotional journey, and as women, we have enough on our plate without other people’s drama. Here are three empowering ways to handle toxic people without compromising your mental well-being.
You Are Not Obligated To Respond
Sometimes, the best way to handle toxic people is to simply not engage. You don't owe anyone a reaction or a response. Recently, I encountered a situation where someone tried to bait me into their emotional drama. Instead of reacting or responding, I chose not to engage...at all. This decision protected my peace and kept me from getting drawn into unnecessary conflict.
Empowering Action: When faced with someone trying to provoke you, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you don't have to respond. Silence can be a powerful response.
Mental Health Tip: Practice mindfulness techniques to stay centered and composed when you feel pressured to react.
Establish Firm Boundaries
Boundaries are the limits and rules we set for ourselves within relationships. They define what we will or won't accept from others. It also helps you know how to respond if those boundaries are crossed. Setting firm boundaries is crucial for protecting your mental health. Clearly define what behaviors are unacceptable and communicate your limits confidently. Boundaries help you maintain control and prevent toxic people from draining your energy.
Empowering Action: Politely but firmly state your boundaries. For instance, say, “I need to end this conversation if it continues in a negative direction.”
Mental Health Tip: Visualize your boundaries as a protective shield, safeguarding your emotional space. "Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves, even when we risk disappointing others." — Brené Brown
Limit Your Exposure
You are not obligated to be in the company of those people you deem as toxic. As women, we were always taught to be nice and kind. Society tells us being nice means dealing with things despite the effects on your mental health. I am here to relieve you of that burden. Choosing not to be around people because it drains you, negatively impacts, or causes other negative feelings is your right! Be strategic about your interactions and avoid situations where you might be exposed to their negativity.
Empowering Action: If you know someone tends to bring you down, plan your interactions carefully. Opt for group settings where their influence is diluted, or keep your encounters brief.
Mental Health Tip: Keep a mental list of activities and environments that uplift you and try to immerse yourself in these more often.
Develop a Strong Support System
Last but not least, having a support system helps a great deal. Building and maintaining a strong support system can buffer you against the effects of toxic people. Having trusted friends, family members, or support groups to turn to can provide perspective, advice, and emotional support.
Empowering Action: Identify the people in your life who are positive influences and make an effort to spend more time with them. Share your experiences and feelings with those who understand and support you.
Mental Health Tip: Regularly check in with your support system, even when things are going well, to build a strong foundation of trust and mutual support.
Managing toxic people is essential for your mental health, especially during menopause. By establishing firm boundaries, limiting your exposure, and choosing not to engage with drama, you can protect your mental well-being and navigate toxic interactions. Remember, your mental health is a priority, and you have the power to create a supportive, empowering environment for yourself.
